Instructor

Gys Basson

Numerical Modeller, Software Engineer and Seismologist

Gys Basson has over 15 years of experience in the research and development of computational tools for modelling rock mass behaviour in deep hard rock underground mines. He has implemented several numerical solvers involving the Boundary Element Method, Finite Element Method, Discrete Element Method, Material Point Method and successfully used these tools to address a wide range of real 3D mining-related research projects. These include examples of simple stress-strain modelling to more advanced coupled hydro-mechanical problems such as hydraulic fracturing preconditioning. He is also an experienced mine seismologist and understands the inner details of a mine's seismic system, network design, waveform processing, source mechanism analysis, hazard assessment, blast reentry, TARPs, and ground motion analysis.
